[Saba Sports News] Former Australia captain and legend Ricky Ponting has embraced a new challenge as he steps into the role of head coach for the Washington Freedom in the upcoming season of Major League Cricket (MLC) based in the United States.
Ponting, who currently serves as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League, adds another feather to his cap with his appointment at the Washington Freedom. His entry follows the departure of Greg Shipperd, the previous head coach of the side, who opted to prioritize his focus on domestic cricket in Australia after the inaugural MLC season last year.
Expressing his enthusiasm for joining the Washington Freedom, Ponting emphasized the growing momentum of cricket in the USA. He also commended Shipperd’s contributions to the team, acknowledging the transition with respect and readiness to build on the foundation laid for success.
“I’m extremely excited to be joining the Washington Freedom in 2024. Cricket is really on the rise in the US, and I’m looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket,” Ponting said as quoted.
“I’ve been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom, and, while it’s a bit surreal to be replacing my mate Greg Shipperd, there’s probably no one better to set up a successful franchise. I’m ready to build on his work as we look towards the coming season,” he added.
Michael Klinger, General Manager of Cricket at Washington Freedom, echoed Ponting’s sentiments, praising his wealth of experience and leadership qualities.
“Ricky was one of the most recognised and revered cricketers in the world during his playing days and is now one of the most respected and coveted coaches on the global circuit,” Klinger stated.
Reflecting on the inaugural season’s performance under the leadership of Moises Henriques, the Washington-based team secured a commendable third position in the points table with three wins and two losses. Despite their strong showing, they faltered in the knockout stage, failing to advance to the qualifiers after a defeat to MI New York in the Eliminator by 16 runs.
The second season of MLC is scheduled to commence on July 4, just four days after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024.
