Lassiter, 37, appreciated the former MVP’s encouragement. Arapag sent Lassiter a message as he was about to break the three-point record he had held for eight seasons, encouraging him to go beyond it.
“We talked for a while, and he expressed his gratitude and how proud he was of my accomplishments,” said Lassit, who plays for San Miguel. On Saturday, as they exchanged text messages, Lassit was on the verge of passing the current Sacramento Kings assistant coach for the most 3-pointers made by any player in PBA history.
Not long after that conversation, Lassiter pulled off the feat in Sunday’s game. In front of a packed crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, he hit six 3-point shots in SAN Miguel’s 131-82 blowout win over Barangay Ginebra, officially becoming the 3-point king in Asia’s oldest professional league.
Lassit needed only three field goals to break Arapague’s record, but he finished the game with six 3-point shots, bringing his total to 1,254 and successfully writing a new chapter in PBA history.
