A day after they were defeated in three days by
innings in Centurion, India’s selection for the second Test against South
Africa now includes uncapped fast bowler Avesh Khan. In Cape Town, the second
and final Test will start on January 3.
Mohammed Shami, who is sidelined for the Test series
due to an ankle ailment, is replaced by Avesh.
After participating in the three ODIs earlier this
month, Avesh has already arrived in South Africa and will remain there to
represent the India A team. He took a five-for on the third day of the Benoni
four-day tournament, which is presently in its second round.
Until that game, Avesh had played 38 first-class games
for 149 wickets, averaging 22.65, with seven five-wicket hauls. He was also the
leading wicket-taker for Madhya Pradesh in the last Ranji Trophy season with 38
scalps from eight games.
India lost two World Test Championship [WTC] points in
the Centurion Test as a result of their slow over rate. Additionally, 10% of
their match fees were punished. As a result, India would drop from fifth to
sixth position in the WTC points standings.
After accounting for time allowances, India was
discovered to be two overs short of the mark. A team loses one point for each
over they are short of the required number of runs, and players are penalised
5% of their match fee.
