[Saba Sports News] As the
Badminton Federation of Malaysia has no intention to bid for the 2026 Thomas
and Uber Cup, the Badminton World Federation has not received any bid
applications thus far. In response, the Badminton World Federation has extended
the bid deadline for the 2026 Thomas and Uber Cup to February 1, 2024. They
cited the original timeframe as being too short to meet the requirements of
potential sponsors. According to the Badminton World Federation’s schedule, the
Sudirman Cup is scheduled for odd years, while the Thomas and Uber Cup is held
in even years. The 2024 Thomas and Uber Cup is set to take place in Chengdu,
China, followed by the 2025 Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China. Due to the economic
downturn, many badminton powerhouses are reluctant to host international
competitions as the organizers bear most of the costs associated with event
execution. Malaysia last hosted the Thomas and Uber Cup in 2010. Some fans
jokingly suggested that Indonesian netizens, who often express dissatisfaction
with China hosting numerous international competitions, should seize the
opportunity and encourage their own Indonesian Badminton Association to apply
for hosting the event. According to them, submitting a bidding application
would likely result in a successful bid.
