[Saba Sports News] Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have forged a strong partnership this season with the Dallas Mavericks. The team’s impressive 22-15 record positions them as a serious playoff contender, largely thanks to the dynamic Irving-Doncic duo. Following a victory over the top-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves, Irving expressed deep respect for Doncic, praising his resilience and record-setting performances as a teammate.
Irving, speaking highly of Doncic for the first time, reflected on getting to know him better as a person and leader. He lauded their mutual influence on the court and Doncic’s exceptional season, even during Irving’s 24-day injury absence. Doncic’s averages of 33.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 9.2 assists make him an MVP contender, while Irving, contributing 23.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, has been an essential support.
“I respect that kid, and how he goes about his business every day, and even if he’s on a bad wheel, he still plays. You have to really give credit to a guy like that, setting records and being his teammate; it’s a pleasure, man. It’s an honor. It makes the game easier. And I know he has the same things to say about me, about making the game easier for one another.”
Doncic reportedly played a key role in acquiring Irving last winter, despite initial doubts about their compatibility. However, they have since demonstrated a strong on-court synergy and mutual respect.
Post-game, Doncic acknowledged Irving’s vital role and offensive impact.
“Yeah, it was great, always been great, always stays aggressive. He’s an amazing player, so we need him; everybody needs him to be just aggressive every time. It’s Kai, man; it’s easy to trust him with the ball to get a bucket. In the end, when he made two 3-pointers, he told me he was tired, so I had to get the ball, but we’re just letting him cook.”
The pair are becoming the NBA’s top backcourt, elevating the Mavericks to new heights, especially with their top-3 defense over the last ten games. This synergy could make them a formidable force in the Western Conference.
