[Saba Sports News] The Minnesota Timberwolves have locked in Rudy Gobert for the long term.
On Tuesday, reports revealed that Gobert and the Timberwolves agreed to a three-year, $110 million contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2027-28 season.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Gobert opted out of his $46.6 million player option for 2025-26 to make the deal work. The French center’s new contract also includes a player option for the final year and a trade kicker.
In his first two seasons with the Timberwolves, Gobert averaged 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks, shooting an impressive 66.1%. He also secured his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award last season.
The Timberwolves paid a steep price in draft picks to acquire Gobert from the Utah Jazz before the 2022-23 season, and that investment may have influenced their decision to prioritize him over former franchise star Karl-Anthony Towns.
After Minnesota traded Towns to the New York Knicks earlier this month, the ex-Timberwolves star took a few shots at his former team. However, with the significant salary cap relief from the trade, it’s no surprise the Timberwolves made the move.
