[Saba Sports News] The Memphis Grizzlies received some positive Ja Morant news ahead of the 2024-25 season, but also faced some setbacks, including an injury to Jaren Jackson Jr. Despite this, Jackson made a bold $150 million bet on his future success by declining a three-year, $106 million extension offer.
With two years and nearly $50 million left on his rookie deal, Jackson opted to wait for a more lucrative four-year, $147 million extension next summer, increasing his average annual salary from $35.5 million to $36.75 million. This also opens the possibility for a player option, providing extra flexibility and financial security.
Jackson’s bet could pay off even bigger if he qualifies for a five-year, $345 million super-max extension by making an All-NBA team, winning MVP, or securing another Defensive Player of the Year title. Having already won DPOY in 2023 and twice earning All-Defense honors, Jackson’s trajectory suggests that the super-max is within reach.
Last season, Jackson posted 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over 66 games, but his health remains a critical factor. Coach Taylor Jenkins indicated that Jackson’s hamstring recovery is progressing, but the team will be cautious with his return.
By passing on the current extension, Jackson has set himself up for a potential massive payday, with the Grizzlies needing to balance the super-max’s $69 million annual potential against the offer Jackson declined.
