[Saba Sports News] As 39-year-old Chris Paul nears retirement, he might still remain closely involved with the game. In an interview with Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News, Paul shared that he’s now open to coaching, a possibility he previously dismissed.
“I always said I would never coach,” Paul said. “But now, I’m not sure. My wife and friends keep telling me I have so much knowledge and love for the game that I could coach. But I also think about being a dad since I’ve missed so much of my kids’ lives. So, I don’t know.”
Paul also expressed interest in NBA ownership after retirement. Entering his 20th season, Paul signed a one-year deal with the Spurs, but it seems his playing career is nearing its end. Despite speculation that playing alongside Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama could extend his time in the league, Paul is considering life beyond the court.
As one of the greatest point guards of the 21st century, coaching could be a natural next step, following in the footsteps of former point guards-turned-coaches like Jason Kidd and Steve Kerr. For now, Paul’s focus is on helping the rebuilding Spurs move forward.
