[Saba Sports News] Dennis Schroder recently shared his experiences of growing up as a Black man in Germany during an interview with Marc J. Spears. As he leads the German national team in the Paris Olympics, Schroder reflected on the challenges of his childhood and how they shaped him both personally and as an athlete.
“Growing up in Germany was tough,” Schroder admitted. “People would question why my skin was Black or why I looked ‘dirty.’ It was wrong, but I just went with it.”
He explained that his journey in basketball began when he was 12, and it was through the sport that he gained respect and acceptance.
“People started respecting me because I did something for Germany and for my hometown,” he said. “Now, we’ve made history by reaching the semifinals. This team is like family; it’s the real deal.”
Schroder emphasized the importance of resilience, offering advice to young Black Germans facing similar struggles. “No matter what anyone says, whether it’s a teacher or a coach, you have to stay focused on your vision. Stay humble, listen to your family, but never lose sight of what you want to achieve. You can accomplish anything.”
Schroder’s basketball career has been remarkable. After entering the NBA as a first-round draft pick in 2014, he played a crucial role in leading Germany to its first-ever FIBA World Cup victory in 2023.
Now, as captain of the national team, he has guided them to the Olympic semifinals for the first time in history. His journey from a challenging childhood to becoming an NBA star and national team leader is a testament to his determination and serves as an inspiration, showing that with perseverance, anything is possible.
