[Saba Sports News] Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins reportedly opted out of playing for Team Canada in the upcoming Paris Olympics. Despite the decision being termed as “mutual” between Wiggins and the Warriors, there seems to be some discontent on his part.
According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Wiggins dealt with an ankle injury towards the end of the 2023-24 NBA season. However, Team Canada’s general manager Rowan Barrett and head coach Jordi Fernandez indicated that Wiggins was disappointed with the outcome and had been preparing diligently to join the national team in Paris next month.
Fernandez expressed empathy for Wiggins, acknowledging his desire to participate while emphasizing that the decision was beyond their control. Meanwhile, the Warriors have been actively exploring trade options for Wiggins amid a turbulent offseason for the franchise.
Wiggins, who signed a four-year, $109 million extension with the Warriors in 2022, recorded a career-low average of 13.2 points on 45.3% shooting from the field last season.
