[Saba Sports News] Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith was cited for careless and negligent driving after an accident that resulted in a pedestrian suffering severe injuries, including the partial amputation of his leg.
The incident occurred as Highsmith was driving home from a game against the Orlando Magic at the Kaseya Center in Miami. The accident happened around 11:20 pm when Highsmith’s vehicle struck a man who was pushing his disabled car on a dark road without the vehicle’s lights on. Despite the circumstances, Highsmith remained at the scene, supporting the injured man until emergency services arrived.
According to Highsmith’s agent, Jerry Dianis, Highsmith was not speeding and had not ingested alcohol or drugs. However, the crash report indicated Highsmith was driving 5 mph over the speed limit at an estimated 45 mph. The victim was taken to South Medical Center in critical condition, with injuries including a partially amputated right leg, fractured left leg, and a potential broken arm.
Highsmith missed the Heat’s next game against the Spurs due to the incident. His citation is not considered a criminal charge.
