[Saba Sports News] Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera have been enlisted as traveling reserves for the Sri Lankan team during the ongoing 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India. This decision aims to provide the team management with additional options to address potential injuries or illnesses that could impact their upcoming matches.
Injuries have been a persistent issue for the Sri Lankan team leading up to the tournament.
The absence of star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was a setback, and spinner Maheesh Theekshana missed the opening game of the World Cup. Pacer Matheesha Pathirana and captain Dasun Shanaka are the latest additions to the injury list, with Shanaka already ruled out of the tournament. Chamika Karunaratne has replaced Shanaka in the squad.
Mathews and Chameera are expected to join the team on Friday, a day before their upcoming match against the Netherlands in Lucknow. Notably, Chameera had initially been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury but has reportedly regained full fitness.
Given the team’s concerns in the bowling department, Chameera’s inclusion is expected to strengthen Sri Lanka’s attack as they aim for their first victory in the tournament.
