This week, Jos Buttler will inform Rob Key that he
intends to stay as England’s captain for both Twenty20 and One-Day
International cricket, beginning with the team’s December Caribbean tour.
With a 160-run victory over the Netherlands in Pune on
Wednesday night, Buttler’s England team snapped a five-match losing record.
They now sit seventh in the World Cup group stage going into the last round of
matches.
With the victory, England moved up from the bottom of
the table and overtook Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands in terms of
Net Run Rate (NRR). Even if they are defeated by Pakistan at Eden Gardens on
Sunday, they might still make it to the 2025 Champions Trophy, which would
relieve some of the burden on Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott.
Having spent two weeks with the team earlier in the
competition, Key, the managing director of men’s cricket for England, has since
left for India. He’ll meet with Buttler and Mott in Kolkata, where they’ll
discuss the selection process for the three ODIs and five T20Is against the
West Indies that take place the following month.
But he confirmed his intention to continue as captain
in both white-ball formats after England’s win. “I’d like to [lead in the
Caribbean],” Buttler said. “I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We
can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make
a plan for that tour. But yeah, I’d like to.”
Buttler conceded that he was “very
frustrated” with his own form. “You want to lead from the front and
do that in your own performance,” he said. “I’ll stick to the stuff
that’s served me well over a long period of time when I’ve had these little
runs of form and hopefully I’ll come out the other side of it very soon.”
