[Saba Sports News] The 2023 Syed Modi International Badminton
Tournament concluded on December 3rd. The tournament is named in special
remembrance of a highly talented Indian badminton singles player, Syed Modi. From
1980 to 1987, Syed Modi won the Indian National Badminton Championships men’s
singles title for eight consecutive years. He also achieved the gold medal in
the men’s singles event at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at
the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi. Unfortunately, on July 28, 1988, at the
age of 26, Modi was shot dead after a regular training session when he was
leaving the sports arena. His promising career was abruptly cut short during
its golden period. At the time, Modi’s wife and her lover were initially
suspected of being the masterminds behind the murder. However, due to a lack of
evidence, the government eventually dropped the investigation.
To commemorate Syed Modi, Indian actor and director Dev Anand made a
film inspired by the Modi murder case titled “Sau Crore” (One Hundred
Million), which was released in 1991. In honor of Syed Modi, the Badminton
Association of India named one of their badminton championships after him.
