[Saba Sports News] Islamabad United etched their name in Pakistan Super League (PSL) history by defeating Multan Sultans in a nail-biting final on Monday. The match, played at the National Stadium in Karachi, went down to the wire with Islamabad securing a dramatic two-wicket victory on the last ball.
This win marks Islamabad United’s third PSL title, solidifying their position as the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history. Their previous championship wins came in 2016 and 2018.
Islamabad United’s win not only secured them the coveted PSL trophy but also saw them set a new record. They are now the first team in PSL history to win three titles.
For Multan Sultans, the defeat extends their heartbreak to a third consecutive PSL final. After their maiden trophy win in 2021, they fell short against Lahore Qalandars in the 2022 final by 42 runs and again in 2023 by a narrow margin.
Islamabad’s batting hero was Martin Guptill, who smashed a crucial fifty in the chase. However, the Player of the Match award deservedly went to all-rounder Imad Wasim. His exceptional bowling performance, including a five-wicket haul – the first in a PSL final – proved instrumental in restricting the Sultans.
While Multan Sultans had their moments, particularly with Usman Khan’s well-made half-century, Imad Wasim’s devastating spell in the final overs shattered their hopes.
The final itself was a spectacle of high-octane cricket, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the very last delivery. The thrilling finish left the Multan Sultans fans devastated, while Islamabad United erupted in jubilation.
