[Saba Sports News] Ex-South Africa captain AB de Villiers has hinted at a potential coaching role with Royal Challengers Bangalore for IPL 2024, revealing that Virat Kohli is keen on having him back in the team setup.
Although there’s no official word from RCB yet, de Villiers, who was inducted into RCB’s Hall of Fame alongside Chris Gayle in 2023, plans to be in Mumbai initially for broadcasting duties. He remains open to the possibility of joining the coaching staff if approached by head coach Andy Flower or captain Faf du Plessis.
De Villiers shared on his YouTube channel that while nothing is confirmed, there’s a chance he might join the team at Kohli’s request, particularly to work with the batters, pending a final decision from the RCB management. Currently, he’s scheduled for commentary during the early weeks of the IPL.
“Nothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters. That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf and the team. For now, I’m just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I’m doing a bit of commentating,” de Villiers said.
De Villiers, who retired in November 2022, left a legacy in the IPL with 184 matches and over 5000 runs. Since retiring, he has shifted his focus to broadcasting and content creation on his YouTube channel. Additionally, he expressed disappointment over Aiden Markram’s removal as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, especially after Markram’s successes in the SA20 tournaments, suggesting an unexpected turn of events with Pat Cummins taking over the leadership.
