[Saba Sports News] Shortly after achieving the milestone of 500 Test wickets, experienced Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin had to abruptly depart from the Rajkot Test against England to be with his mother, who was critically ill in the ICU in Chennai. Ashwin disclosed the emotional exchange he had with his mother upon arriving, revealing she questioned his decision to visit her, insisting he should remain with his team.
“When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, ‘Why did you come?’ The next time she was conscious, she said, “I think you should go back because the Test match is happening,” Ashwin shared.
He further shared insights into his family’s profound dedication to his cricketing career, acknowledging the significant sacrifices they made to support his aspirations. The family’s life has revolved around cricket, enduring the same highs and lows he has experienced throughout his career.
“The entire family is built on cricket and to facilitate my career. It hasn’t been easy. It has been very hard on them. It’s been a big roller-coaster for them – going through the emotions and ups and downs that I myself do.”
“I am in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me. They have eliminated anything that comes in the way of my cricket. That has been the sole purpose of their lives ever since I can remember,” he added.
Despite the challenges, his family’s unwavering support has been pivotal in his journey, something Ashwin deeply cherishes, especially noting his father’s persistent enthusiasm, akin to watching his son play his debut international match. This steadfast commitment from his family has been instrumental in paving the path for his successful cricketing career.
