[Saba Sports News] Former India cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir announced on Saturday that he is stepping back from his political career to refocus on cricket commitments.
Gambhir, a member of Lok Sabha, joined the BJP in 2019. He secured victory in the East Delhi seat during the 2019 General Elections, defeating Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi Marlena and Congress Leader Arvind Singh Lovely.
However, he has now requested BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda to relieve him of his political duties due to his renewed commitment to cricket. This announcement coincides with the BJP’s impending release of its first list of 100 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
In a tweet from his ‘X’ account, Gambhir stated, “I have requested BJP president JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments.”
Expressing gratitude, Gambhir thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the opportunity to serve the people.
“I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi ji and Amit Shah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!,” he added.
As the IPL 2024 approaches, Gambhir is poised to make his comeback with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), this time in a mentoring role. Under his captaincy, KKR clinched the IPL trophy in 2012 and 2014. With his mentorship this season, Shreyas Iyer-led KKR aim to secure their third IPL title.
In the previous season, Gambhir served as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), which finished third on the IPL 2023 points table.
