[Saba Sports News] Beginning in 2021, Formula 1
introduced spending limits in an effort to address the resource disparity
between top teams and smaller teams. These measures include a $135 million operating
budget limit per season and a four-year capital expenditure limit of $45
million. The goal of these limits is to level the playing field and reduce the
performance gap between teams. In recent seasons, the advantage gained by big
teams through significant financial investments has diminished as the resource
gap narrows. However, there are unintended consequences to these restrictions,
such as teams being unable to make substantial modifications to their chassis
during the season. For instance, Mercedes and Ferrari discovered design flaws
in their cars last season but were unable to introduce a “B” version
of the chassis due to the financial constraints imposed by the regulations.
Despite such limitations, the editor believes that the spending restrictions in
F1 prevent excessive competition and contribute to narrowing the gap between
stronger and weaker teams. Moreover, these measures align with the FIA’s vision
of green and sustainable development, making them worthy of continued
promotion. Overall, the advantages of the spending limits outweigh the
disadvantages.
