[Saba Sports News] The third ODI of a four-match series between England and New Zealand is underway at Kennington Oval in London. The series stands at 1-1, with New Zealand winning the toss and choosing to bowl. Trent Boult, their star seamer, once again made an electrifying start, dismissing Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root in the opening overs.
However, Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes, both left-handed batters, joined forces to create an extraordinary 199-run partnership in 165 balls, strengthening England’s position. Stokes, known for his aggressive play, outshone Malan. England’s Test captain reached his half-century in 44 balls and took only 32 more deliveries to reach a century, his fourth in ODIs and the fastest of his career.
Malan played steadily, maintaining a run-a-ball tempo. He was on track for his fifth ODI century but fell frustratingly short when he nicked one to the keeper while attempting a flick off Boult, ending his innings at 96 off 95 balls.
Ben Stokes, displaying his trademark determination, continued to dominate the New Zealand bowlers even after reaching his fourth ODI century. He didn’t show any complacency and, remarkably, achieved his first 150-plus score, making 182 off 124 balls in just 106 balls. During his extraordinary innings, Stokes hammered 15 boundaries and 9 sixes. This performance propelled England to one of their highest-ever ODI totals.
Stokes’ half-century in the first ODI and this sensational innings in the third game bode well for England’s prospects in the upcoming 50-over World Cup, less than a month away. The 32-year-old came out of ODI retirement before this series to participate in the marquee event, where England aims to defend their title.
