[Saba Sports News] Former India cricketer opined on Virat Kohli, stating that the latter enjoys being on the field and does not seem very much attracted to leadership.
Manjrekar likened Kohli to Sachin Tendulkar. As Sachin also loved to spend as much time on the field as one could imagine, Manjrekar said that it is the same process for Kohli, who too thrives on the field without giving much attention to power.
“The one similarity between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar is that both
of them enjoy playing cricket. They want to be on the field. He was not
part of the team for the game against Bangladesh but was still on the
field. I don’t think Virat Kohli wants power or leadership,” Manjrekar said as quoted on Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel.
The cricket-turned-commentator further added Kohli is team-man, emphasising how taking back captaincy is not his motive.
“He just wants to play and it looks like he enjoys being a part
of the team. He captained the team for a very long time, so there is no
scope for an unfulfilled dream. Being with the team, travelling with
players, going to the ground, and being part of winning moments are more
important to him than having power.”
Kohli last played for India in the recently-concluded Asia Cup where he scored a match-winning hundred versus Pakistan. He has been rested for the first two ODIs of the upcoming series against Australia. He is included the squad for the third fixture.
After this, his focus will shift to ODI World Cup 2023, starting on October 5.
