[Saba Sports News] South Africa explosive middle-order batter David Miller sent a significant statement ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, expressing the team’s determination to create history by winning the tournament for the very first time.
The only ICC trophy won by the Proteas was back in 1998 when they defeated West Indies in the final of the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy (formerly known as the Wills International Cup). South Africa faced a quarter-final defeat against New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup held in India. They reached the semifinals of the 2015 World Cup and finished at seventh place in the 2019 World Cup
However, this time, with a formidable squad, Miller appears optimistic about South Africa’s chances to win a World Cup. He believes that Temba Bavuma, who is the captain of South Africa, will accomplish something special in the upcoming quadrennial competition.
“We genuinely believe that we can do something special. The reality is we haven’t won a World Cup, so there’s no point brushing that under the carpet. But personally I don’t live with those things on my shoulders. The past is the past. It doesn’t impact me at all,” said Miller in an interview with BBC Sport.
The 34-year-old further expressed that this time they genuinely have a chance to make history and prove everyone wrong. He also praised his skipper Bavuma for his exceptional performance while representing the Proteas, especially in ODIs.
“It’s about what’s in front of you, the next ball, your next moment. I know the other guys are in the same mindset. We’re looking at it as a chance to create history. What a brilliant opportunity this is. If we play well, we know we’ve got a chance.
“I think we’ve proved some people wrong. Take Temba Bavuma. He’s had so much flak from a lot of people, and he’s basically just shoved it right back in their faces. He’s a terrific captain and a phenomenal player in this format. It’s a strong lineup. We back ourselves to compete with the bat,” he added.
South Africa will start their World Cup campaign with the match against Sri Lanka on October 7 in Delhi.
