[Saba Sports News] After missing out on Damian Lillard, the Miami Heat have brought back a familiar face, Wayne Ellington, though this time in a coaching capacity. The 35-year-old former Heat guard will be joining Coach Erik Spoelstra’s staff as a player development coach.
Ellington, a 13-year NBA veteran, previously played for the Heat from 2016 to 2019, where he was known for his sharpshooting skills beyond the three-point line. During his time with Miami, he set a franchise record with 227 three-pointers in the 2017-18 season, a mark later surpassed by Duncan Robinson. Ellington also represented the Heat in the NBA All-Star Three-Point Contest during that same season.
The Heat have a tradition of keeping former players within their organization, as seen with the addition of Ellington to the coaching staff. Other former Heat players like Caron Butler, Chris Quinn, and Malik Allen already hold coaching positions on Spoelstra’s staff.
Additionally, ex-Miami great Alonzo Mourning serves as the vice president of player programs and development for the team, demonstrating the team’s commitment to its former stars both on and off the court.
