[Saba Sports News] The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that former India cricketer and 2011 World Cup-winning team member Sachin Tendulkar would serve as the Global Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2023.
In a statement released by the ICC on their official website, Bharat Ratna Tendulkar will be seen walking with the prestigious trophy on October 5 before the start of the first match of the World Cup 2023 between England and New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Tendulkar expressed his excitement for the tournament and the impact it can have on aspiring young cricketers.
“From being a ball boy in 1987 to representing the country in six editions, World Cups have always held a special place in my heart. Winning the World Cup in 2011 is the proudest moment of my cricketing journey,” said Tendulkar as quoted in ICC’s press release.
“With so many special teams and players set to compete hard in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 here in India, I am excitedly looking forward to this fantastic tournament. Marquee events like the World Cup seed dreams in young minds, I hope this edition too inspires young girls and boys to pick up sports and represent their countries at the highest level,” he added.
The media release further disclosed prominent names, who are going to be the ambassadors of ICC for the upcoming quadrennial tournament.
The esteemed group of ICC ambassadors includes cricketing legends such as West Indies’ Vivian Richards, South Africa’s AB de Villiers, England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan, Australia’s Aaron Finch, Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, India’s Suresh Raina and Mithali Raj, and Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez.
These cricket icons will play a pivotal role in enhancing the spectator experience by bringing fans closer to the action. They will engage with fans through meet and greets, share expert analysis through the ICC online media zone, and even attend select matches across the country.
