[Saba Sports News] Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011, praised former India captain MS Dhoni, under whom the Men in Blue ended their 28-year-long ODI World Cup drought.
The spin maestro Ashwin opened up and compared the legendary wicketkeeper-batter and captain Dhoni to a movie director. He opined that Dhoni is similar to a director, who assembles the cast and knows exactly who can deliver what in which scene.
“You know what I think of Dhoni? He is not a captain; he is a director. He is actually a very, very good movie director…like he is a director for the game. What does a movie director do? He picks characters and he picks the exact cast for that character, right?” Ashwin said as quoted to Harsha Bhogle in episode 5 of Kutti Stories with Ash.
“So I think Dhoni, in his head, he picks a character. He knows where that character fits, who is the person for the character and gives that person the exact situation to go and play his role to the T,” he added.
Dhoni last played international cricket in July 2019 against New Zealand in the semi-final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, where India had to face a loss at the hands of the Black Caps. On 15th August 2020, Captain Cool announced his retirement from international cricket.
Dhoni is the first and only cricketer to have won of all three major ICC trophies at his time – the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Moreover, he also led India to victory in the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups. The 42-year-old Dhoni has five IPL trophies in his cabinet, joint-most by any captain.
