[Saba Sports News] The Los Angeles Lakers stirred up some controversy this week with their remarks regarding the reigning champion Denver Nuggets. These two teams have a noteworthy history, having crossed paths in two of the last four postseasons. In the most recent encounter, the Nuggets emerged victorious with a four-game sweep of the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, ultimately clinching the NBA title.
During Media Day, Anthony Davis issued a stern warning to Denver, with support from his co-star LeBron James. Lakers teammate Austin Reaves also chimed in, expressing how motivated the team felt due to the Nuggets’ post-victory celebrations.
On Wednesday, it was Nuggets head coach Malone’s turn to respond.
“Are they talking about us?” Malone quipped, as reported by ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “That was, what, four months ago? … If they’re still preoccupied with us, that’s their concern … If we’re occupying their thoughts, then I suppose that’s on them.”
To be fair, Malone himself contributed to the tension with the Lakers. While his players mostly maintained composure after their victory, Malone, seemingly frustrated by the media’s constant focus on the Lakers, took every opportunity to remind everyone of his team’s sweep of the purple and gold. At one point, even LeBron James appeared to consider Malone’s comments inappropriate and appeared to respond in kind.
Of course, as the coach who defeated the Lakers and guided his team to their inaugural franchise championship, Malone has every right to revel in the victory. The spoils go to the victor, and if the Lakers are displeased with it, their best course of action is to strive to dethrone the Nuggets next season.”
