[Saba Sports News] NBA insider Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated recently reported on the ongoing extension negotiations between the Golden State Warriors and their star sharpshooter, Klay Thompson, who is entering the final year of his contract.
According to Mannix, both Thompson and the Warriors are keen on continuing their partnership. NBA executives view a four-year extension in the range of $30-$35 million per year as a reasonable expectation for Thompson.
Mannix writes, “There is no sign of discord between Thompson and the Warriors,” suggesting that an agreement is likely to be reached. Thompson himself expressed his desire to remain with the team in a recent interview with The Athletic.
Thompson is set to earn $43.2 million in the final year of his current contract. While an average annual salary of $30-$35 million would represent a reduction, it is still a substantial commitment, especially for a player who will turn 34 this season and has faced significant lower-body injuries in recent years.
A potential four-year contract extension would keep Thompson with the team until his 38th birthday and place him in the salary range of fellow shooting guards like Donovan Mitchell (27 years old) and Anthony Edwards (22 years old), surpassing the earnings of players like Jordan Poole (24 years old) and Tyler Herro (23 years old).
