Star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh of Australia has been
pulled out of the match against England due to personal concerns, which has
caused another setback to the country’s World Cup campaign.
Marsh will not be playing in Saturday’s match against
England in Ahmedabad since he has returned home by plane to Perth. This comes
after Glenn Maxwell was declared ineligible for the match on Monday due to a
concussion sustained on a golf outing.
In a statement released on Thursday, Cricket Australia
verified that Marsh had returned home by plane on Wednesday evening.
“Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh has
returned home from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 late last night for
personal reasons,” the statement said. “A timeline on his return to
the squad is to be confirmed. No further detail will be offered at this
time.”
After recovering from a small calf injury that held
him out of the last two matches against the Netherlands and New Zealand, Marcus
Stoinis is probably fit to return to the team. Cameron Green, on the other
hand, is expected to be called up, while Marnus Labuschagne is expected to stay
in the middle order. For the match against England, Australia will only have 13
fit players; the only extra players available are Alex Carey and Sean Abbott.
Steven Smith will probably return to his preferred
place at number three as a result of Marsh’s absence. However, the absence of
Marsh and Maxwell, two of Australia’s most potent and destructive players, is a
severe blow to their balance.
